Candle Safety

Candles have a unique ability to create a special atmosphere in any location where they are being burned… however, a burning candle is an open flame and therefore must be respected as a potential fire hazard. To remain safe while you are burning a candle and to minimise the risk of accidental fire, there are a number of things that you should always ensure:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended

  • Always keep lighted candles away from anything that may burn, such as curtains, furniture, clothing and hair.

  • Keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children and pets.

  • Always burn candles on a heat resistant surface, and in an appropriate fire resistant candle holder. The candle should sit firmly within the container and the container itself should be located on a flat and stable surface to prevent the candle from falling.

  • Never leave pillar, dinner or container candles and tea lights to burn directly on a plastic surface.

  • Leave at least 10 centimetres between lighted candles and never burn a candle in an enclosed space or underneath shelves.

  • Always put burning candles out and allow them to cool down before you attempt to move them as hot candle wax can spill and cause burns.

  • Never fall asleep when you are burning a candle.
